Joyous bride. Grieving widow. Naughty boy. 
Politicized. Romanticized. Ostracized. Mesmerized. 
A secret hiding spot. A prison. A fort. 


The process of painting has the power to transform, manipulate, diminish, or exaggerate subject matter. I exploit this idea by appropriating photographs and filtering them through my painted interpretation often decontextualizing them.  I comb the Internet for images of figures surrounded by various textiles: shroud, blanket, bandages, tent, veil, or headscarf.  The potential for transformation of a joyous or whimsical photograph into an eerie, haunting, or even political image fascinates me, and vice versa. Through this shift of context, one is left to ponder the actual differences in the symbolism of a textile.  I explore the push and pull of race and sexuality, ritual and religion, the human condition, submission and domination, and positioning of females culturally and traditionally.</description>

Symbolism surrounds us in our daily living, experienced in the minutiae of street signage to larger abstract social references. Rife with meaning and subtext, and dependent on its presentation, it has been used on occasion as an inflammatory tool to incite controversy.  What happens when representations are kept ambiguous, and we are left to fill in our own meanings?  I intentionally strip away overt connotations, leaving the scenarios open for interpretation.  Viewers will connect to the paintings uniquely, depending on their own emotional conditioning.   

Each painting explores symbolic imagery acquired through media and personal life experiences.  These are constructed, almost theatrical presentations devoid of information other than the actual figures themselves.  Symbols of varying social or political significance such as head coverings and bondage were also injected. The reflections metaphorically explore the idea of attributes of people, as well as the multiplicity of figures in a society.  This play on optics illustrates the resulting confusion or distortion that occurs when perspectives shift. 

This body of work gave me the visual language to communicate complex idiosyncratic and almost contradictory aspects of society as viewed from various perspectives. I explore the push and pull of topics of race and sexuality, ritual and religion, the human condition, submission and domination, and finally positioning of females both culturally and traditionally.

Reflections connect two or more seemingly identical objects, but are merely an optical illusion.   One object is the "truth" while the other is an aspect of the truth.  Much like a chameleon transforms in different environments, human identity changes as well.  Our identifiers (the skin we are in, our belongings, how we carry ourselves) give us our individuality, but can also push us into social groupings. Societal perceptions are viewed through a prism of preconceived notions and biases.  How each viewer reads these paintings will vary depending on their own personal perspectives and vantage point. 

Through the use of optics, I want to demonstrate the ambiguity of figures, and the resulting confusion or distortion that occurs when perspectives shift.  My exploration began with the individual and their varying aspects, but recently expanded into more complex configurations. Pathologies are dysfunctions within the body of an organism, comparable to the disorder/disruptions within our own society.   Scouring the internet for images of pathologies that interested me, I noticed how many of the faces were censored to protect the privacy of the patient.  It got me thinking about the disconnect many of us have with our own sense of mortality, as well as the diseases and social issues affecting other countries.  

Affixing these found pathologies over the faces of my healthy friends and family,  I connected them with issues they normally would not contend with.   My intention was to see what emotional reaction these paintings may elicit &#38; to generate dialogue about the people in the paintings as well as the source of the pathological/social issue. </description>

Reflections connect two or more seemingly identical objects, but are merely an optical illusion. One object is the "truth" while the other is an aspect of the truth. Much like a chameleon transforms in different environments, human identity changes as well. Our identifiers (the skin we are in, our belongings, how we carry ourselves) give us our individuality, but can also push us into social groupings. 

Societal perceptions are viewed through a prism of preconceived notions &#38; biases. How each viewer reads these paintings will vary depending on their own personal perspectives and vantage point.  Through the use of optics, I attempt to demonstrate the ambiguity of figures, and the resulting confusion or distortion that occurs when perspectives shift. </description>
